“The Summer to Remember”
by Roch Monnig, Jr.

The summer of 2009 is a summer that I will remember for the rest of my life. In just three months, I matured as a person, a volunteer, and a Christian. For this, I give thanks to S.T.A.R.

I did not plan on volunteering at S.T.A.R., last summer. In fact, I never planned on volunteering at S.T.A.R., period. I was afraid. I did not know what to say or do around people with disabilities. I figured that, if I did not know how to handle them, I should not be around them. There was another thing that kept me from S.T.A.R. There was something in the back of mind that would not allow me to see the riders for who they really were – regular people.

Attempting to put all that behind me, I decided to give it a try. I attended volunteer training and was so inspired to help out. When it came time to sign up for classes, I signed up for at least two classes each day, Monday through Friday. I went to the orientations and could not wait until the first week. When it came, it turned out great and I was hooked. The ball had begun rolling and there was no way it was going to stop. It was not always easy. There were times where I told myself that I could not do it. In the back of my mind though, there was a voice that told me to stay. I do not even want to think about what that summer would have been like, if I had not listened to that voice.

As the summer progressed, I was all about S.T.A.R. I became a horse leader, traveled to shows, and participated in a parade. I spread the word about S.T.A.R. wherever I went. I was thrilled to sub for anyone. It was something new that I loved. I wanted to get as much of it as I could. I began to consider some of the riders my friends and could actually carry on lengthy conversations with them. I felt like I was part of a family. It was a family that was always friendly, always accepting, and never judging.  In a sense, S.T.A.R. was my home away from home.

One day, one of my friends asked me why I volunteer at S.T.A.R. so much. I was about to answer when I just stopped. I had to think. I did not know what to say. I told them that it was impossible to tell them why I volunteer so much. I said that, because it is impossible to describe the effect that S.T.A.R. has on a person in such a small amount of words. I felt that effect, when I first began volunteering. I feel that effect now. In no other place have I felt God’s presence more than I have at S.T.A.R. He is in every single rider, volunteer, and employee. When it rains, there is always a little bit of sunshine that continues to shine on the barn. There is no doubt in my mind that that little ray of sunshine is God smiling down on everyone there.

Today, I, honestly, feel that I am different because of last summer. I have overcome my difficulties of dealing with people who have disabilities. I have developed a better work ethic that I am sure will help me in the future. I have become closer to God, in ways that I have never thought possible. He has given me the ability to see the true person in everyone, regardless of how they appear on the outside. S.T.A.R. is an incredible organization that has given me worth, confidence, and faith.  I have never been more proud to be part of something so special.

Roch Monnig, Jr. (Rochy) is in the KCHS Class of 2012.  He is the son of Roch and Elayne Monnig.

Guild members present KCHS teachers with SEAS grants in October 2009

October 2009 – Teachers at Sacred Heart Cathedral School and Knoxville Catholic High School were awarded more than $7,000 through the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (SEAS) Teacher Grant Program. The SEAS Guild of Sacred Heart Cathedral organize a children’s consignment sale in the summer and proceeds fund the grant program.

This program helps to fund many creative projects that keep Knoxville Catholic’s learning environment innovative, collaborative, and engaging to students. Teachers apply annually in September for SEAS grants and funding is used in the current school year.

Visit www.exchange.shcathedral.org to learn more about the Sacred Heart Children’s Consignment Sale. Be a consignor or simply come to shop! You can directly benefit your children and other students by participating in the sale, which offers items from newborns to teens.
