Social Studies Department

The Social Studies courses cover the people and places of our world. This includes studies of the past and present, the people and the places where they live, and the causes and effects of events. At Knoxville Catholic High School students in the class of 2012 are required to take Geography*, World History, U.S. History, U.S. Government, and Economics to meet graduation requirements. Beginning with the class of 2013, Geography is no longer a graduation requirement.

Courses Offered

World History CP Grade 10 1 Credit
World History Honors Grade 10 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and 95+ in English 1 CP or 93+ in English 1 Honors. Writing samples are also used to determine placement.
World History Combined Studies Honors Grade 10 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and 95+ in English 1CP or 93+ in English 1 Honors. Writing samples are also used to determine placement. Co-requisite: English 2 Combined Studies Honors.
 
European History AP Grade 10, 11, 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Recommendation from current English teacher, and the following grade requirements: English 1 & 2 Honors: 93+, English 3H: 88+, World History Honors or CS Honors: 95+, US History AP- 93+, US History CP95+ or Honors 93+. An application, including a brief analytical writing sample, is required.
 
U.S. History CP Grade 11 1 Credit
U.S. History Honors Grade 11 1 Credit
Prerequisite: 90+ in English 2Honors or Combined Studies Honors and 90+ in World History Honors or 95+ in English 2 CP and 95+ in World History CP. Writing samples in the content area are also used to determine placement.                                                                                                                                   
U.S. History AP Grade 11 1 Credit
Prerequisite: 95+ in World History CP and 93+ in English 2 CP, 85+ in English 2Honors or Combined Studies Honors and World History Honors or Combined Studies Honors. Application required.
 
U.S. Government CP Grade 12 ½ Credit
U.S. Government Honors Grade 12 ½ Credit
Prerequisite: 95+ in U.S. History CP or 93+ in U.S. History Honors, or 90+ in U.S. History AP and 85+ in English 3 Honors. Recommendation from U.S. History teacher. 
U.S. Government AP Grade 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: 95+ in U.S. History CP or 93+ in U.S. History Honors, 93+ in U.S. History AP; 85+ in English 3 Honors or English 3 AP, or 93+ in English 3CP. Application, with a brief writing sample, is required.
