Foreign Language Department

The Foreign Language Department of Knoxville Catholic High School offers comprehensive course studies in French, Latin, and Spanish. All students are required to earn two credits in the same foreign language in order to meet graduation requirements. Students are encouraged to complete at least three years of the same language. Students who have completed their graduation requirement or who are continuing in their first foreign language may apply to start a second foreign language, if desired. Applications, which consist largely of recommendations by the current language teacher in regards to maturity and work ethic, may be obtained from a language teacher or school counselor and are returned by the stated deadline to Ms. Ashley Lawrence. Accepted students will be admitted into a level 1 section of a second language, or may choose to test into a level 2 course, based on teacher recommendation and as space allows. All honors foreign language courses are designed for students who demonstrate above average ability in the target language. All honors level students take a national foreign language exam in the spring which provides an excellent benchmark for national comparison. Students in upper level foreign language courses often test out of level one college courses.
