English Department

The English Department of Knoxville Catholic High School requires the successful completion of English 1, 2, 3, 4 and 1 semester of Writing and Research. Students who complete these courses should be well-prepared for college with a solid background in literary studies, grammar, and composition.

Prerequisite: 90+ in English 2 Honors, or 93+ in English 2CP
English 3 AP Grade 11 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Scores in the 90th percentile are recommended on verbal/reading sections of the most recent standardized test. English teacher recommendation required. Application and completion of summer portfolio are required.
English 4 CP Grade 12 1 Credit
 Prerequisite: English 3 (any level)
English 4 Honors Grade 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: 90+ in English 3H or 95+ in English 3CP
English 4 AP Grade 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of English 3H or AP, demonstrated work ethic and maturity. Scores in the 90th percentile on the verbal portion of the PSAT are recommended. Application and completion of a summer portfolio are required.
English 4 Dual Enrollment Honors Grade 12 1 HS Credit and up to 6 hours college credit
Prerequisite: Score of 19 or higher on Reading and English ACT subtests or SAT Creative Reading and Writing scores of 460-470. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 ACT must be taken by April of Junior year in order to enroll in this course.

Speech CP  Grades 9-12 ½ Credit
Introduction to Yearbook CP  Grades 9-12 ½ Credit
Pass/Fail Grading. Class size is limited.
 Yearbook Production CP  Grades 10-12 ½ Credit
Pass/Fail Grading. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. Class size is limited.
Yearbook Editing  Grades 10-12 1 Credit
Pass/Fail Grading. Prerequisite: Yearbook production. Application and instructor approval. 
Journalism/Newspaper 1 Credit or ½ Credit
Prerequisite: Instructor approval for upper classmen. Freshmen must be in English 1 Honors or get instructor approval. This course is offered for either a full year (1 credit) or a semester (1/2 credit). Students wishing to be editors must take the full year course.
